«Very clean room, good value for an expensive city»

Dec 5, 2008 Claraclara, Paris 4 of 5 stars

The rooms were very, very clean! I've been travelling a lot, but this hotel was the cleanest one I 've seen! Comfort Inn chain hotels are not tastefully decorated, nor fashonable design hotels. However, this one in Zurich is extremely clean! and good value for this expensive city. The situation is good too. Even if it is situated on a hill, it is very central.

Breakfast is good, (I didn't try the champagne!) there were rice and a sort of miso soup perhaps for some Japanese guests, but if I may, I would advise the hotel to use the instant powder miso soup if they have to. However, there was a helpful atmosphere.

The use of internet is rather expensive. The free tea service in the lounge is super!

«Schönes Hotel in City-Lage»

Ein Expedia Reisender, 9. Jan 2008 5 of 5 stars

«Acceptable stay, but better air conditioning would be nice!»

I was in Zurich for a week for a conference held at ETH Zurich. The Comfort Inn was very close and reasonably inexpensive. Several colleagues had stayed their previously and said that it was fine.

It's very conveniently located for both ETH and the city center: I walked to the hotel from the main station in about 10 minutes (admittedly, I knew where it was from previous trips to the city), but you can also take a tram. It was a 5 minute walk from my conference.

I had a room in the "basement" -- it's not really a basement, as my room had a window. My room was also at the back, so I didn't get disturbed by trams running all night. The room itself was quiet, the bed comfortable, and it had all the basic fixings I needed for a stay in which I wouldn't be in the room much. The bathroom was small, but clean, and everything worked fine.

The room was not huge (and was in places difficult to navigate), but I wasn't concerned with that.

The room had wireless, and (on the second day of my stay) wired connections via the TV. I didn't try the wired access. Wireless was from swisscom, at their usual exhorbitant prices, but there was a Euro 2008 deal on when I arrived, so I got a decent rate for a week.

My only main grumble with the room was that it was unbearably hot. There was no real airflow, even with the window open. The air conditioning didn't do much except blow hot air around and cool it a little. Colleagues staying at the same hotel, but on a higher floor, had better luck with the air conditioning.

Breakfast was excellent - lots of choice, good coffee, friendly staff. Everyone at the hotel I met was friendly and helpful, and in some cases in possession of a good and cynical sense of humour.

I think if I had to be in my hotel room more, I would not have been happy with my stay (I also would have had to move rooms; it got cool at midnight!).

I will have to be back in Zurich the same time next year, and I think I'll probably stay somewhere else, just because of the temperature of the room. Overall, the Comfort Inn is fine, and I would happily stay there in the winter, but not in a hot summer!

The Comfort Inn Royal is located about five-ten minute walk east of the main train station. There are two staircases to climb, so if you don't have luggage on wheels, it's best to take a cab or a street car. Two or three lines stop right in front of the hotel (so ask for a room not facing the street). It's a pretty easy walk to the Old City center. Overall, very quiet. Nice restaurant across the street, but not much else in the immediate area right outside the door. Price is right and the service was very good. Breakfast was just OK, not a lot of variety. They have free newspapers in the morning to «borrow».

«Nice hotel; nice staff»

Geofbob, London, Jun 1, 2007  4 of 5 stars

My wife and I have just stayed at this hotel for 6 nights, and found it excellent for the price we paid - we got a 3 nights for 2 discount. The room and bathroom wern't large, but we have certainly stayed in smaller. The TV had lots of channels, inc CNN. There was a good range of food at the buffet breakfast, inc CHAMPAGNE, which we much appreciated! The hotel also has some attractive modern art on view.

DO NOT be influenced by the review on this website which says the staff were rude, and that they had the worst experience of their life. We found the staff not just courteous, but very friendly and helpful.

Two or three downsides are 1. that though fairly close to the station the hotel is up a steep hill, (but trams 6 and 10 from the station stop right at the hotel) and 2. that if you're in a front room the trams can be quite noisy, but if you close the window it can be quite warm, and there is partial a/c but not enough to totally cool the room.

«Unlike the North American Comfort Inns»

palk, Toronto, Oct 3, 2006  3 of 5 stars

The Comfort Inn Royal (centre of the City ) is a good deal. As a lone traveller I was staying 1 night and wanted to get a feel of the City instead of staying near the airport. Since my luggage went on to a further destination, I only had a carry-on & decided to take the train which is in the airport. 3 stops and 10 minutes, I arrived at the Main Station. I had received instructions from Comfort which tram to take and it was only 2 stops. The hotel is not new but, unlike the North American Comfort Inns had a continuous nice small bar for self serve, coffee, tea, etc. and a wonderful European buffet breakfast. My room was a economy room. --very small (tiny) and compact but fine for 1 night. Their other rooms from photos appear to be very nice, but not elaborate. Make sure you get a room NOT on the street side as the trams go all night. The tram stops in front of the hotel and it is 2 stops to the shopping districts on both sides of the river. I would recommend this as an economy hotel with very good amenities and extremely nice staff. Shuttle to Airport 24 SF.

«Comfortable hotel and good value for a very expensive city.»

GeorgeATL, Atlanta, Georgia, Apr 21, 2007  4 of 5 stars

I’m a travel agent, and have stayed in many hotels around the world. . . Some good. . . Some really bad. I used to live in Zurich, and have returned several times and have always stayed at this hotel. So I speak from experience. Let me tell you what you can expect at this hotel, and then you make up your mind if you would like to stay here.

What the hotel offers:
Small, comfortable, clean rooms. If you want a “heavenly bed” with a flat-screen TV and a bathroom the size of Manhattan, then this hotel is not for you.

Nice (but not perfect) location. Though this hotel is within walking distance of the main train station and the Bahnhofstrasse (main shopping area) it’s a few blocks away. Zurich has a tram system (streetcars) which will take you everywhere. This hotel is located two stops from the main strain station. If you plan on doing some sightseeing, I would recommend you purchase a “tageskarte” which gives you unlimited travel on the tram system. This hotel is located right around the corner from the “Niederdorf” which is the old part of the city. If you’re looking for a hotel located at the train station, then you should stay at the (much more expensive) Schweizerhof. But again, for the price, it has a very nice location.

Staff: I’ll give this area “mixed reviews”. It all depends upon who is at the front desk. Some people are more friendly than others. I haven’t had a “horrible” experience with the staff but I would say that some of them are not the friendliest in the world. Nonetheless, I have never felt thought that I shouldn’t stay here because of the staff.

In the end, you need to consider what kind of person you are. Do you stay at Ritz-Carlton’s, Hyatt’s, Fairmont’s, and other luxury hotels? Then I would recommend you stay at the Bauer Au Lac, Savoy, Park Zurich Hyatt. If you’re looking for an affordable, comfortable hotel with a reasonably good location, then this hotel is probably for you.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are driving, you must contact the hotel directly to “reserve” a parking space. They have only 12 spaces, and sometime you even have to park tandem, so make sure you contact the hotel in advance, otherwise you could be driving around trying to find a place to park.

«Freundlicher Empfang»

An Expedia Traveler, Bamberg, Apr 12, 2007  5 of 5 stars
